What is Ballroom Dancing?

Ballroom dance is a broad term that encompasses a variety of partner dances traditionally performed in a large, open floor space or “ballroom.” Originating from folk dances in Europe, it has evolved into a globally recognized category of dance with standard techniques and steps. It is known for its elegance, sophistication, and emphasis on partnership and etiquette.

Ballroom dance is divided into two main styles: International, including dances like the Waltz, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Foxtrot, and Quickstep in the ‘Standard’ category and Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, Paso Doble, and Jive in the ‘Latin’ category; and American, which includes the Smooth (Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Viennese Waltz) and Rhythm (Cha Cha, Rumba, East Coast Swing, Bolero, Mambo) categories.

Dances in ballroom require specific posture, frame, and movement techniques, with partners often maintaining a closed hold. The lead and follow dynamics are central to executing intricate patterns and steps. The dance form is both competitive and social, celebrated globally in dance sport competitions, social events, and film and television. Ballroom dance continues to evolve, incorporating influences from other dance styles while maintaining its classic charm and elegance.
