What is the first dance at a wedding?
The first dance is traditionally the moment during the reception where newlyweds dance together for the first time as a married couple.
When does the first dance usually take place?
Though it can occur at different times during the ceremony, the first dance generally takes place after speeches as the transition to the “reception”, or more informal part of the night.
What song should we choose for our first dance?
You can choose any song that is special for both you and your partner. Fast, slow, romantic ballad, or rock anthem, the most important thing is that you pick a song that you feel represents your personality as a couple. If you can’t pick just one, some couples even choose to do a medley!
How long should the first dance song be?
Most couples choose to dance for between 1.5 and 3.5 minutes long, but times can vary widely.
What if I only want to dance to part of a song?
No problem! RJ Dance Co can edit your song (or songs) for the perfect mix and length to fit your dance.
When should I start lessons for my first dance?
While this can vary based on availability, it’s often best to start sooner rather than later. This way, you and your partner will have more time to practice and will not feel rushed to try to get ready in the days leading up to your wedding. As a general rule, 6 months out is a good time to start building your dance together.
How many lessons should I take?
This entirely depends on how much dance experience you have, how elaborate you want to be, and how quickly you learn. Most couples will do at least 5 lessons for a simple dance, but it can range from 2-3 lessons all the way up to 50 depending on your wants and needs.
Do we need to choreograph the entire dance?
Choreography is completely optional. Some couples prefer to choreograph the entire dance, but others prefer to learn a few moves and keep the dance a little more spontaneous. Your teacher can help you figure out what is most comfortable for you.
These are just a few of the considerations to make for a first dance. Other factors, such as dress restrictions, adding personal touches, etc. can be discussed with your instructor.
Remember, while this is a general guideline, the most important thing is that the first dance is a special experience for you as a couple.
